Behold the Oscar nominees who will be competing tonight to take home little gold statuettes. Anne Thompson has revealed her final predictions for who will win, but it’s worth remembering how it is we got here.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were officially announced Tuesday, January 24 via livestream by Oscar winner Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal,” “The Night Of”) and Allison Williams (“M3GAN,” “Get Out,” “Girls”).

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” led the pack with 11 nominations, including for Best Picture, as well as Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and acting nominees for Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, and Michelle Yeoh.

In the month and a half since the nominees were unveiled, “Everything Everywhere” has become the unquestioned frontrunner for Best Picture, with also a lock on two of the acting prizes – Yeoh for Best Actress and Quan for Supporting Actor, with both Curtis and Hsu being a possibility in the Supporting Actress race. “Everything Everywhere” has triumphed at virtually every awards show this season except for the BAFTAs.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” received nine nominations overall, including for acting contenders Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Colin Farrell. It now probably stands its best chance in the Original Screenplay category, where writer-director Martin McDonagh is beloved by the Academy’s writers branch.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” also stunned with nine nominations, representing just what a strong push Netflix gave it the past few months and the story’s undeniable power. Observers recognized it could be a big contender based on how well it performed on the Oscar longlists in December. Thompson thinks it will be a contender, including winning Best Cinematography.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” also received eight nominations, including for Best Picture and Austin Butler for Best Actor, but Luhrmann himself was left out of Best Director. Butler is now arguably the frontrunner for Best Actor, though Brendan Fraser could still be a spoiler for “The Whale,” given his triumph at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

“The Fabelmans” received seven nominations, including Steven Spielberg for Best Director. Of note, John Williams became the oldest nominee for a competitive Oscar ever with, at 90, his nod for Best Original Score.

“Top Gun: Maverick” got six nominations, including for Best Picture. But Tom Cruise was not nominated for Best Actor, as some had been thinking he might. “TAR” also received six nominations. Both films now seem like long shots for any wins, with Best Sound being the best bet for “Maverick.”

By comparison, it was a muted showing for “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which, despite raking in the box office and its predecessor’s stunning Oscar nominations performance, only received four nods, including Picture. James Cameron was shut out of Director. The film is considered to be the frontrunner in Best Visual Effects.

“Women Talking” only received two nominations, and “Triangle of Sadness” three. But the ones for “Triangle” were especially impressive, given that the film didn’t turn up elsewhere: Original Screenplay, Director, and Picture. “Women Talking” has a good shot to win Adapted Screenplay, after the film triumphed at the usually predictive USC Scripter Awards.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel is set to return as the host for the third time, with the telecast streaming on ABC.com, Hulu Live TV, and YouTubeTV in addition to broadcast.
